Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hit theaters with an R-rating. The runtime is chock full of dirty humor, f-bombs, and brutal action, things to which most audiences and critics responded well. Seriously, some of the kills would make Frank Castle blush. The ten entries below showcase the most brutal ways people were dispatched of in the recent movie.
Some of these aren’t for the faint of heart, and a few are even quite tragic, but the villains’ deaths are wholly satisfying displays of justice. Despite all this talk of violence, it is important to remember the movie is more than gore, filled with great portrayals and jolly, albeit morbid, humor.
The Slide
At the start of the movie’s climactic battle, the lead characters finally come together, forming an uneasy alliance to combat Roman Sionis and his crew. They start the fight by sliding down into a room to run away from baddies descending from the roof.
One of them follows the team down the slide, causing Huntress, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, to jump on him and ride him down the rest of the way while stabbing his body numerous times. Everybody else is impressed by this maneuver and its ferocity.
Chauffeur Hit By The Van
Don’t feel too bad for Roman Sionis’s former driver. He probably deserved his broken legs broken after insulting Harley in the club. Shortly after, he finds Harley in the street and attempts to shoot her. Fortunately for Harley, another man with a grievance tries to hit her with his van.
The shooter misses and hits the guy in the van, who then proceeds to drive right into Sionis’s former chauffeur. We’d say it is a lesson for those seeking vengeance, but it is not that kind of movie.
Everybody Huntress Shoots In The Throat
A lot of people take an arrow to the throat thanks to Huntress’s weapon of choice. Her accuracy with a crossbow is second to none, thanks to the intense training regiment she underwent in her youth. Maybe focusing on vengeance for her entire life was not the healthy choice for her mental well-being, but it made for a great character in Birds of Prey.
Because it is impossible to pick just one victim, we decided to lump it in as one entry. Those guards from Skyrim are feeling awfully lucky now since they only took an arrow to the knee.
Peeling Off People’s Faces
This one is filed under the more tragic deaths. After Mr. Keo, the head of a rival crime family, rejects Sionis’s business offer, the main antagonist kidnaps him and his family. While they are hanging upside down, he instructs Victor Zsasz to cut Mr. Keo’s face off. Zsasz then kills Mr. Keo’s wife.
Sionis is about to let the daughter go until her crying produces a snot bubble, which disgusts him to no end, sealing the innocent girl’s fate. While the last death is off-screen, the audience feels the cruelty of Sionis’s actions.
Victor Zsasz
Victor Zsasz, Sionis’s number one henchman, also gets shot through the throat by Huntress, but his time with pain isn’t over yet. While on the floor, Harley proceeds to stab him with a needle over and over again out of rage.
Before his fatal arrow injury, Zsasz tranquilized Harley and licked her face while she was conscious but unable to react. Given the cringe-inducing reaction from the audience, one can only imagine how Harley must have felt, making her violent outburst towards him completely understandable.
The Bertinelli Crime Family
On one hand, it is hard to shed too many tears for a mobster gunned down in his home. His executioners went too far when they took out his whole family, children and all. The only survivor was his daughter, who went on to become Huntress.
They did it to find a diamond that held the codes to all the family’s bank accounts. They never found it, however, until the events of the movie. The criminals of Gotham are nasty people who have no problem mowing down innocents to achieve their goals.
Giving A Hyena Some Dinner
Right off the bat, Harley’s attitude is established when she goes to buy an exotic pet. The clerk comes on to her as she shows interest in a Hyena, and the next shot shows how well that ended. She fed him to the Hyena, and all the audience sees is the animal chewing on his leg, all that is left of him.
Some would consider it overkill, and maybe they wouldn’t be wrong, but it is the risk one takes when they flirt with strangers.
The Frida Kahlo Assassin
After escaping the police station with Cassandra Cain, Harley is pursued on a freeway by an assassin with an uncanny resemblance to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The protagonist then lights up a stick of dynamite and hands it Cassandra, who recently woke up after being knocked out.
Cassandra tosses it out of the window on Harley’s order, and the car blows up. Cassandra only realized what was in her hand and what transpired after the fact. A teenage girl just killed an assassin and doesn’t seem too broken up about it, but it all fits in with the movie’s tone.
Everybody In The Car During The Ending Chase
While chasing Roman Sionis down during the final battle, Harley first deals with a car full of bad guys while on roller skates. She jumps into the vehicle, knocks everyone out, and then makes her way to Sionis’s car.
The previous car then veers into a parked automobile, causing it to flip over. What really makes this moment shine is seeing the bodies fly out of their seats and into the pavement.
Roman Sionis
Roman Sionis is holding Cassandra Cain hostage on a pier while Harley stands helpless after using the one bullet she had. Cain, with her notable pickpocket skill, took a grenade from Harley’s arsenal and slipped it into Roman’s jacket. She reveals the pin, and Sionis’s panic allows her to escape and Harley kicks him over the edge. The grenade explodes before he hits the water and the audience sees his various limbs scatter into the ocean.
Sionis was always a coward hiding behind money and muscle, so it would have been inappropriate if he had a fistfight with Harley, because he clearly wasn’t her equal in combat prowess.
