Audiences just adored sitcom Full House back in the eighties and nineties, and fans were excited when it made a comeback in the reboot Fuller House. This time, DJ is a single mother raising three boys with the help of her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy. The story may sound familiar, but the show is filled with new jokes to bring the (Fuller) house down.
We’ve examined the show’s tendency to break the fourth wall, a concept in which characters acknowledge that they are on TV show or that the actors have other lives. Fuller House has done this so many times that we had to make a second list! Here are ten more times Fuller House shattered that fourth wall illusion:
Fashion Empire
In the first Full House, the star was no doubt the adorable Michelle played by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. The two twins made it big after their spot on the show, but they failed to make a reappearance on Fuller House. Did the cast and crew decide to tease them about this? You got it, dude! In the first episode, “Our Very First Show Again,” Stephanie asks where her little sister is.
Danny says that she is busy running her fashion empire in New York, something that MK and Ashley have been doing in real life. Then Danny and the rest all stare at the camera for a solid ten seconds. Talk about lack of a fourth wall!
Violins
It was common in Full House for soft music to play in the background during emotional moments on the show. Apparently, the audiences weren’t the only ones who heard it! In Fuller House’s season 1 episode 2, “Moving Day,” Jackson complains about how his mom wants him to share a room with his younger brother.
Uncle Jesse tells Jackson that he and Max should hug each other, saying how they used to “hug it out” every day in the eighties. “Sometimes it was so sweet, you could hear violin music.” The sound crew may have had something to do with that!
Two Babies
It’s very common for the roles of babies in television to be played by twins. This is because they can only be under the hot lights for so long, and if one baby isn’t cooperating during a scene, the other can be brought in. We know that baby Michelle from the first Full House was played by twins, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Stephanie makes a comment alluding to the fact that there wasn’t just one baby when she changes Tommy’s diaper in season 1 episode 2 of Fuller House, “Moving Day.”
“I changed so many of Michelle’s diapers, I feel like there were two of her!” Funnily enough, there are two babies playing Tommy too!
You Oughta Know
DJ and Steve are headed out on a 90s theme date in season 1 episode 12, “Save the Dates.” DJ has her old slap bracelet and some Huggies shoulder pads to complete her look, and Steve tells her that he has Alanis Morissette bumping in the car.
As they head out the door, DJ pipes up with a bit of gossip. “Do you know who that song is really about?” She’s referring to Morissette’s hit, “You Oughta Know,” and this bop from ‘95 is rumored to be about Dave Coulier, who played Fuller House’s Joey!
Child Stars
We all know the Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber all started out as child actors on Full House back in the eighties, and it’s safe to say that life has gone pretty well for them. So often we hear about child stars who lose their way in life, and it seems that Stephanie has heard about it too.
She makes a comment in season 2 episode 5, “Doggy Daddy,” while reading a book about Ariana Grande, a child star from Nickelodeon: “You know, it’s so nice to see things to turn out so well for one of those child sitcom stars.” We agree that it is pretty nice, and we’re happy to see our favorite child stars return for Fuller House.
Full House
It’s Thanksgiving for the Fullers in season 2 episode 6, “Fuller Thanksgiving,” and as with most things they do, it’s going to be big. Extended family is coming in, and everything must be in order! DJ has already put together a sleeping arrangement chart and a schedule of the day’s activities. (There’s also a suggested dress code written down, and she’s passed out vouchers for a six-minute shower!)
With all of the planning, DJ makes a quick reference to the show’s title: “It’s going to be a very full house!” In the end, there were over twenty people in attendance! Sounds more like a Fuller house to us!
Wish You Were Here
Season 2 has arrived, and in episode 6, the cast makes fun of the fact that the Olsen twins are missing from the reunion once again. The entire family has gotten together for Thanksgiving, including all of the original Full House cast as well as their new partners and children. Michelle is still not there, but DJ is sure to mention her kindly in her prayer before the meal, saying that she hopes Michelle can join them next year.
Uncle Jesse leans back in his chair to look at the camera, addressing Mary Kate and Ashley. “Come, it’ll be fun.” It probably would be, Jesse, but the girls either didn’t see his invitation or chose not to accept it!
The View
Due to an interesting sequence of events in season 2 episode 9, “Glazed and Confused,” Kimmy ends up joining Danny to cohost Wake Up America, the fictional talk show that he normally hosts with Aunt Becky. Whether on purpose for laughs or simply because she can sometimes be Kimmy the clueless, Kimmy keeps making references to other talk shows, including calling Danny, “Reege,” and greeting the audience with, “Good morning, America!”
Danny continuously tells her that she’s mentioning the wrong show, but Kimmy continues until the end, saying, “Take a little time to enjoy the view.” This can be seen as a nod to Candace Cameron Bure’s other job as a host on The View!
Like a TV Show
Full House fans were overwhelmed with nostalgia in season 5 episode 1, “Welcome Home, Baby-to-Be-Named-Later,” where the kids are in the attic looking through old items that audiences can recognize from the original show. Max knew the significance of many of the items, stating that he saw them on the family’s old videos.
“We have eight years of carefully curated home movies,” he says, encouraging Jackson and Ramona to watch them. “It’s almost like a TV show.” Indeed it is, Max! Luckily, he’ll have his own “home movies” from his childhood as well!
Kirk Cameron
In season 5 episode 8, “Five Dates with Kimmy Gibbler,” we see the second half of the famous Cameron siblings when Candace’s brother Kirk Cameron makes an appearance as himself. Earlier in the episode, DJ and Kimmy are talking about Kimmy’s relationships, and she mentions that one of her longest relationships was with her Kirk Cameron poster.
DJ makes a face and says this about the Growing Pains star: “I never understood the appeal with him.” This sounds just like when a friend happens to like your older brother, and you can’t figure out what she sees in him! Pretty funny, DJ!
