Gilmore Girls is a show that focuses on a very special mother-daughter duo, Lorelai and Rory. These two are best friends. They talk super fast and do a lot of it. They make tons of pop culture references. They love eating, especially junk food. And they are the definition of coffee addicts and caffeine lovers.
Throughout the show, there were several memorable lines that were spoken about this beverage. And while there are a good amount of things to love about Gilmore Girls, fellow coffee-lovers will surely appreciate the 10 quotes below, which are all about this wonderful and delicious drink.
I Was Coffee
Netflix gave the world a sequel to this show in 2016, titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and this sequel gave the world this quote: “Everything in my life has something to do with coffee. I believe in a former life, I was coffee.”
Lorelai speaks these words to Luke, as she was going to get coffee when she realized that she wanted to finally marry him… ASAP. It is true that many moments of her life are centered around this drink, and it is easy to believe that she somehow used to actually be this drink!
I Can’t Stop
Another great Lorelai-to-Luke line summarizes why we caffeine-addicts need this drink so much and so often: “I can’t stop drinking the coffee. I stop drinking coffee, I stop doing the standing and the walking and the words-putting-into-sentences doing.”
Whether it is a cup every single morning, a pot throughout the day or a Gilmore amount all day and every day, coffee is necessary for functioning and so much more!
I Need It
Most true addicts can relate to Lorelai’s ability to pretty much drink any coffee at any time and in any form. Once, she gasp had not had any all day, causing her to say this: “I’ll drink it, shoot it, eat it, snort it, whatever form it’s in.” The point was… She needs a caffeinated coffee!
Of course, there were plenty of times when these two Gilmore girls tried coffee someplace other than Luke’s and were disappointed. Desperate times called for desperate measures, but they preferred Luke’s over any other cup.
Throw In The Whole Cow
Here is the next quote that is up: “I need coffee. Extra strong. Double caf. Triple caf. No, forget the caf. Throw in the whole cow and serve it to this man right here!”
In this instance, Lorelai was actually trying to get Michel a cup of coffee, but this does sound like something she would order for herself. Plus, Lorelai is known for her jokes and puns, like the one in this line, which calls for the whole cow. Surely we all have had mornings that called for drinks this strong, right?
Extra Strong
Some of the coffee-related scenes in Gilmore Girls had to do with how these characters took their drinks, which was like this: “I made it extra strong. It should blacken your teeth and rot your stomach.” See, they could handle that, as evidenced by their interesting diets within this fictional world.
Yes, this is another good ol’ exaggeration, full of humor, but it is another one that is certainly relatable. Don’t give us weak stuff. Don’t hold back. We are not scared of black teeth, nor rotted stomachs. Make it strong. Extra strong!
One Bag/Cup Of Water
Chris, Rory’s dad, also hinted that he understood the Gilmore girls’ addiction when Lorelai asked to make sure he knew how to make the type of coffee they like. His response? “One bag of coffee per cup of water, right?”
Whenever this television series did show Lorelai or Rory making their own coffee, they definitely did pour in a good amount of grounds. It may not have actually been a whole bag per cup or per pot, but the point lives on: Make it now and make it strong.
Make Love To A Hot Beverage
When the main characters were not drinking coffee (well, and sometimes, when they were), they could have been on dates or getting proposed to or kissing someone special, since romantic relationships played a big part in their story, too. But they may actually prefer caffeine to boyfriends, which is how some of the rest of us are, too!
In fact, Lorelai once said the following: “If it was physically possible to make love to a hot beverage, this would be the one.” That must have been some drink.
You Like Coffee?
One of those relationships was between Max and Lorelai, and once, he asked her if she liked coffee. Her response (in a serious tone and with this serious face, since it is a serious answer)? “Only with my oxygen.”
This is one of the most-quoted lines from this show, since coffee-lovers around the world so feel her here! We like several things in life, but at the top of the list there is oxygen, and there is caffeine. That really is all we need to be happy, so keep it coming, please and thanks.
Since You Always Do
Next up is a line from Lane, Rory’s best friend: “I thought you might like some coffee, since you always do.”
The people around the Gilmore girls knew that they needed and wanted coffee all day long. Therefore, a good surprise gift or date idea could be this fantastic drink, as they would always be needing another cup. Thankfully, us fellow coffee-drinkers may have true friends like this, as well, who also know that bringing us another cup is always smart. After all, there is no such thing as too much, especially not when living like a Gilmore!
Coffee In An I.V.
And last but not least is a statement that many of us have probably spoken at least a couple of times in life: “I need coffee in an I.V.”
This quote came about in Season 1 Episode 2. Luke joked that there was no coffee but that there was herbal tea. Lorelai said it was not an herbal tea morning (Is it ever? Ew.) and that it was a jumbo coffee morning. She, of course, ended up getting some of this precious liquid from him, and the line became a classic.
