Shipping is something that happens in all kinds of fandoms, and Disney movies are no exception. While Disney might own many franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel, there is also a lot of shipping for more classic Disney characters such as in the animated movies. Romance is a big part of these movies, especially the ones about Disney princesses, but the canon pairings aren’t the only ones that could have been great.

Here are ten Disney pairings that fans wish had become canon.

Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan

While many popular fan pairings exist between two characters in the same movie, there are many others that are crossover pairings. Given how many Disney movies there are, it’s not surprising that many people have thought about how characters from different movies would be good together. While Alice and Peter Pan might not be a super popular pairing, they do make a lot of sense. They are both characters that exist in a fantasy world and have very different perspectives on life than most people.

Anna and Belle

This is another crossover pairing, but this time between two of the Disney princesses. While Anna and Belle never meet in canon, their personalities would actually go well together. Anna might already have a good match in Kristoff, but in another world she would likely get along well with the kind and intelligent Belle. They are both caring people who are charismatic, but they also have enough differences to keep things interesting.

Jack Frost and Elsa

This is probably one of the most popular animated Disney character pairings out there. While many people would prefer Elsa to be in a relationship with another woman, there is also a contingent of fans who see these two together.

This is largely because of the fact that they are both magical beings who are able to control ice. Many people like the aesthetic of this couple because of their abilities and the way they look. However, there’s definitely a stronger argument to be made for giving Elsa a girlfriend.

Aurora and Cinderella

This is another crossover pairing of Disney princesses. While most of the Disney princesses, especially from older movies, involve the princesses getting a prince in the end, modern fans like to think beyond that. Aurora and Cinderella are two of the classic princesses, and they would make for a beautiful pairing. They are both rather caring and soft-spoken, and they would likely understand each other better than their princes understand them.

Gaston and Lefou

This pairing is one that was talked about somewhat when the live-action remake was created. While the re-make might have subtly included the fact that Lefou was queer, many fans were upset about the stereotypical way this was included. While Gaston and Lefou wouldn’t necessarily be a healthy couple, it would still be more interesting and less troubling than pairing Gaston with a woman.

Maleficent and the Evil Queen

While many great Disney ships involve the main characters and are often focused on good characters, there are also some compelling pairings that have to do with the villains. While there are many heterosexual villian pairings such as Maleficent and Jafar, a romance between Maleficent and the Evil Queen is even more compelling. While these two would do a lot of terrible things together, they would look fabulous while doing so.

Woody and Buzz

There are quite a few pairings on this list that don’t appear in the same movie, but Woody and Buzz do. Much of the conflict in the first Toy Story movie has to do with these two, and they are definitely important in each other’s lives. They later become good friends, and a lot of the emotional moments in the franchise are between these two. They definitely would make a good enemies-to-lovers ship. This might not be one of the biggest ships out there, but there is something rather sweet about it.

Merida and Moana

Many of the pairings on this list are LGBT because of the fact that there aren’t any canon queer pairings in Disney canon. This is really a shame and a problem with representation that many fans have pointed out. Because Disney refuses to include LGBT+ people in any of their movies in a significant way, the only way fans have to feel included is to make their own pairings in fandom.

While Merida and Moana never meet, they would actually have quite a lot in common. They both understand the burdens of being leaders and having certain expectations on their shoulders, and they both have to figure out how to be themselves in that system.

Prince Eric and Prince Charming

This is another crossover pairing that has to do with Disney princesses because it’s not just the princesses themselves that should have all the fun. While the Disney princes from earlier movies might not be given the most detailed or unique personalities, Eric and Charming would make a sweet pair. There are also many other Disney prince pairings out there that fans have written about or made fanart of that are really interesting.

Elsa and Honeymaren

Of all of the recent fandom pairings that have gotten a lot of attention, Elsa and Honeymaren is probably the biggest one. Fans have been rooting for Elsa to be canonically queer ever since Frozen came out. There is a lot of subtext in her narrative, and her songs and actions could easily be read as a queer person coming into their own. When Honeymaren was briefly introduced as a character in Frozen 2, many fans were hoping she would be Elsa’s girlfriend. It’s also a shame that Honeymaren herself didn’t get a bigger role in the movie, and many people feel like part of this might have been to reduce interpretations of their story as queer.
