There are plenty of things to enjoy while watching the historical fiction drama, Outlander – the show that focuses on life in the Scottish highlands in the 18th-century and the WWII nurse who unexpectedly finds herself there. But the best part of the show goes far past the war and political strife of the time period. It’s the romance and the incredible moments shared between the couples – particularly Claire and Jamie – that make the show as amazing as it is.

There is a myriad of romantic gestures throughout the series, but some were far greater than others. These are the 10 Biggest (& Best) Romantic Gestures On Outlander, so far.

Jamie Organizing Their Wedding

Jamie and Claire’s relationship did not start out under the most romantic circumstances, but rather out of necessity for Claire’s safety. But there was no denying the two had already begun developing feelings for one another.

So even though Jamie was primarily doing this to save Claire from Blackjack Randall, he still wanted their wedding day to be as perfect and traditional as possible. He made sure she had a ring, a gorgeous wedding dress, and even got his family’s tartan to wear for himself. He also was determined to get married by a priest and everything he sought out for their big day was accomplished thanks to his determination.

He was going above and beyond for Claire before they had even truly begun.

Roger Following Brianna Through The Stones

When Brianna decided to go back in time through the stones to hopefully save her parents from certain death at Fraser’s Ridge, she wasn’t on the best of terms with Roger, though the two clearly still had feelings for each other.

Regardless, when Roger found out what she had done, he decided he would follow the love of his life back in time, risking his own life and saying goodbye to the life he once knew in his own time in Scotland.

The fact he was willing to sacrifice so much for someone who had technically rejected his original marriage proposal shows how much he loves Bree.

When Jamie Guarded Claire’s Bedroom Door

Before Claire and Jamie were married, Jamie was still very fond of the English nurse and wanted to protect her at all costs. This included when she was on the road with him and the other men, collecting the rents from the MacKenzie clan’s tenants.

While away, Claire was by herself in her bedroom for the night when she heard noises from outside her door. Turns out, it was Jamie lying on the hard floor to guard her door from any unwanted intruders.

It was unbelievably sweet that he cared so much about Claire to want to guard her when he hardly knew her at this point.

Marsali Getting Murtagh To Hire Fergus

Marsali and Fergus are one of the newest couples to emerge on Outlander and we can’t say enough how adorable they are together. They are now married with a “wee bairn” of their own. Marsali, at this point, has noticed that Fergus has a lot of insecurities about his missing hand and often feels he is turned away because of it.

So she asks Murtagh to ask him to join the Regulators, Murtagh’s militia group. She wants him to feel wanted and appreciated, so Murtagh does as she asks. As if that wasn’t romantic enough, Fergus then tells Murtagh he cannot fight with him because his place is at home with his wife and child.

These two are just perfect for each other.

Jamie Shares His Full Name With Claire At Their Wedding

Up until Jamie and Claire’s wedding day, Claire was told Jamie’s last name was MacTavish. This was because Jamie was a wanted man, and for a time, the MacKenzie clan weren’t sure they could trust Claire since she was an English woman who appeared under suspicious circumstances.

So Jamie played it safe and gave her a fake last name, that is, until their wedding day. When Claire was visibly nervous about their impending nuptials, she stated she didn’t even know his name. He smiled and replied that his name is, “James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser.”

Roger And Brianna’s Handfasting

Once Roger finds Brianna back in the 18th-century, they quickly forgive each other for past mistakes and realize they should not waste any more time apart. Brianna even wants to marry Roger at this point, while she was unsure of moving that fast with him before.

He decides they will be wed that day in a handfasting ceremony. Handfasting is a Highlands tradition that will make them wed for a year and a day if they do not have a minister present to marry them.

Their ceremony and their intimate evening was the reunion we all had waited for and deserved.

Claire Chooses Jamie Over Frank

All throughout the first half of the first season of Outlander, Claire is struggling with wanting to get back to her own time, and first husband, Frank, while also developing intensely strong feelings for Jamie. She even was beginning to enjoy her life in the Scottish Highlands in 1743.

But later in the season, after she tells Jamie her entire time traveling tale after her witch trial, he brings her back to the stones at Craigh Na Dun, intending to let her go back to Frank, even if it breaks his heart. In the end, it is Jamie – and Scotland – that Claire chooses because he is her soulmate.

Claire’s New Ring From Jamie

In season 4, Claire and Jamie the rest of their crew are attacked by pirates, including the infamous Stephen Bonnet they had just saved from hanging.

During the brutal attack, they steal many important items, including Claire’s ring. Yes, the ring Jamie gave her all those years ago on their wedding day – the one made from the key to his home in Lallybroch.

But later, long after the attack, Jamie makes Claire a new ring made from one of his mother’s candlesticks. He’d asked Murtagh to fashion it with the inscription that translates to “Give me a thousand kisses,” which is unbelievably swoon-worthy.

Roger Chooses Brianna

Roger went to hell and back to try and get back to Brianna in season 4. After a serious misunderstanding where Jamie thought he was the man who had harmed his daughter, Jamie let Young Ian sell Roger off to the Mohawk.

He was determined to get him back after realizing his mistake, but at the same time, Bree was pregnant and it might have been Bonnet’s – the man who actually attacked her.

Once Claire and Jamie found Roger and saved his life, they told him everything so he could make his decision on whether he could still be in Brianna’s life, whether the child was his or not. Finally, Roger made his decision, and it was Brianna – and their child – that he wanted, forever.

Claire Returns To Jamie 20 Years Later

It was devastating when Claire had to leave Jamie just before the Battle of Culloden in the season 2 finale. It was even worse when we realized she would be apart from him for 20 years.

They both led entirely different lives in different times for those two decades, but once Claire learned he was alive, she became determined to find her way back to him, with Bree and Roger’s help.

She left her life behind in Boston after she had Bree’s blessing, but it was still a significant sacrifice and risk to take. But it was all worth it the moment Jamie saw her in his print shop back in the 18th-century. The print shop episode will forever be a favorite for Outlander fans.
