10. West Side Story

West Side Story tells the tale of Tony and Maria, two people from different cultures who are forbidden from being together. Both Tony and Maria’s families are in the midst of a mob war against each other, making West Side Story the perfect modern-day take on Romeo and Juliet.

If you’re in the mood for a musical classic that’s bursting with romance and killer dance numbers, West Side Story is the movie for you- That is assuming you’re okay with tragic endings. This is one of those films that you and your honey should only watch if you’re in the mood for something a bit darker than your average Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore Rom-Com. West Side Story is a great pick for the romantic-hearted. Plus, the songs are so catchy that you and your significant other will be singing them for weeks on end afterward! (Cheers to hoping your partner has a good singing voice…)

9. Happy Anniversary

Happy Anniversary is a great film for couples who are already way past the honeymoon phase. It tells the story of Molly and Sam, a couple who is trying to decide whether or not to fight for their relationship now that the spark is all gone. We’re so used to romantic films plotting around two people who are just getting to know each other, so it’s really refreshing that there’s a movie out there for couples who have already been there/done that.

8. Carol

If you want to watch a work of art, Carol is your movie. An adaptation of the novel “The Price of Salt”, this film tells the story of Therese and Carol, two women in the 1950s who discover that they are falling in love with one another. There are consequences to their forbidden love for more reasons than one, considering the fact that Carol has a husband who is on to her.

If you and your lover are in the mood for a beautiful film and can appreciate brilliant cinematography, Carol is a smart choice. Be prepared to cry a little.

7. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is the perfect film to watch with bae if you’re both down for a fun as hell viewing experience that is as entertaining as it is romantic. The movie tells the story of Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a garage band artist who falls in love with a free-spirited girl named Romona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Simple, right? Wrong! Girl’s got major baggage due to the fact that all of her ex-boyfriends are trying to destroy Pilgrim for taking their girl.

Directed by Edgar Wright, you already know it’s gonna be a good one. From epic visuals to intense energy and a sublime indie soundtrack, this film is a total adventure that will add some flavor to your usual movie night.

6. One Day

This is a great movie for couples who might have started out as friends. It tells the story of Dexter and Emma, played by Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway. The two become best friends on their last night of college after attempting (yet failing) to sleep with one another.

The movie shows the two growing old together as platonic(ish) friends over a 20 year period. Talk about being stuck in the friend zone! It’s sweet, romantic, and oozing with wish fulfillment. The only downside is Anne Hathaway’s attempt of a British accent, but other than that, you’ve got yourself a solid romance film.

5. Obvious Child

Obvious Child is a romantic comedy starring Jenny Slate and Jake Lacy. This isn’t your average romantic comedy though, because even though “boy meets girl” and “girl meets boy”, boy accidentally gets girl pregnant! Yikes.

Slate’s character makes the choice to get an abortion after deciding she isn’t ready to raise a kid. Obvious Child is able to tackle serious issues in a manner that has seldom been done before in cinema history. Despite the heavy subject at hand, the indie movie manages to feel like any lighthearted romantic comedy you might expect from the likes of a Judd Apatow film. If you’re in the mood for something progressive and hilarious, this is it.

4. Sleeping With Other People

Sleeping with other People tells the story of Jake and Lainey, played by Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie. The two lose their virginities to each other in college, mutually deciding to leave it as nothing more than a one night stand. Years later, Jake and Lainey run into each other while at a sex addicts anonymous meeting. In an effort not to screw things up in their relationship, Jake and Lainey decide to stay platonic friends. Things get more and more difficult as their attraction for each other grows stronger.

If you want a film with insane chemistry that oozes out of the screen, watch Sleeping With Other People. It’s a feel-good movie with a killer cast and a lovely soundtrack. Although it is a comedy starring two well-known comedians, Sleeping With Other People never attempts to hold back from its romantic elements and some might even say it focuses a lot more on the “rom” than the “com”.

3. Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Don’t let the name fool you. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is one of the few romantic comedies ever released to be as funny as it is romantic. You will be clutching your stomach from laughing so hard while clutching your heart from all the emotions you will experience. Zack and Miri, (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks), are longtime best friends who are in desperate need of cash. As expected from the title, they decide the best way to get some money is to make a porno together! Of course, everything changes after they have sex and can no longer see each other as “just friends”.

Zack and Miri is filled with raunchy humor, so if you’re not into that sort of thing you might want to skip out on this one. Yet if you’re looking for a movie with big laughs and a big heart, look no further.

2. Man Up

Man Up is a British romantic comedy starring Lake Bell and Simon Pegg. Pegg and Bell play Jack and Nancy, two people who were never supposed to meet. Jack mistakes Nancy to be his blind date, and Nancy, although guilty, decides to just go with it. Although Nancy knows what she’s doing is wrong, she continues to pretend to be his actual date because of the connection the two have. Once she finally tells him the truth, chaos ensues in this hilarious rom-com.

Pegg and Bell are able to create some serious heat between their characters without ever having to take their clothes off, yet the sparks flying between the two leads is only half of what makes Man Up such a wonderful movie. It has big laughs, a smart soundtrack, unique camera work, and a fantastic premise. What more could you possibly want in a movie? Plus, if Simon Pegg is in it, you already know it’s gonna be good. Oh, and it should be added that Lake Bell absolutely nails the British accent unlike Ms. Hathaway in One Day.

1. The Notebook

You already knew this would be number one on the list, didn’t you? How could it not be? It is an instant classic, bursting with passion. The dialogue is terrific, the acting is superb, and it’s pretty much the number 1 movie you think of when you hear the word “romance”. In fact, watching The Notebook with your partner might as well be considered a milestone in a relationship.

It may be a little too intense to watch on a first or second date if we’re gonna be completely honest, but hey, everyone works at their own pace. If you are looking for something a bit more lighthearted, you might want to choose something else on this list, but if you’re the kind of couple that wants to feel all the emotions this world has to offer, it’s just a click away on Netflix.
