2020 will be loaded with action movies. Whether it’s a sequel, remake or original story, there is a lot to be excited about in the coming months. With the Avengers and Star Wars sagas coming to an end, the belt for the most popular action movie is up for grabs.

Of all movies released every year, action movies seem to be the leading genre. This makes it quite difficult to whittle the list down to just ten. With that being said, here are ten action movies scheduled to be released in 2020 to look forward to.

Mulan

This may be considered a remake of the Disney classic but it is everything but.  While there is music, but it’s not really a musical, but there is plenty to be excited about.  This is one of several live-action Disney remakes of their animated features. In case you are unfamiliar with the story of Mulan, allow us to fill you in.

When China goes to war, every household must send a male to serve in the military. Mulan, a young woman, cuts her hair and disguises herself as a man and goes to serve in place of her elderly father. Niki Caro is directing, and the cast features some of China’s biggest stars.  Mulan comes to theatres on March 27th.

Venom 2

A sequel was all but guaranteed when Venom killed at the box office a couple of years ago. This October, Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock and his dark alter ego, Venom.  According to IMDB, Michelle Williams is returning as Anne Weying and Woody Harrelson will play Carnage.

This time around, Andy Serkis directs, and the sequel will be written by Kelly Marcel. Marcel is best known for Saving Mr. Banks and Fifty Shades of Grey, so it will be interesting to see her take on an action plot. One thing sure to be on the minds of Marvel fans for this flick is whether or not Tom Holland’s Spiderman will show up opposite of Hardy.

The Gentlemen

This film was released in the United States a little over a week ago and has done well at the box office, so there is real interest in this Guy Ritchie crime flick. Ritchie directed and wrote the story and the screenplay in what for him is a return to form. It is the first British crime film he has penned since RocknRolla back in 2008.

Like so many other movies on this list, its cast is star-studded with Henry Golding, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Strong, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, and Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey plays a drug king whose world is turned upside down while attempting to bring his business to London.

Black Widow

With Endgame closing the book on some of the Marvel characters, the studio needs a character to be the next face of the franchise.  That character is Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson. Scar Jo has had a monster a couple of years. On top of Infinity War and Endgame, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Jojo Rabbit and received Best Actress nomination for Marriage Story.

The heat check she is currently on will have fans excited for Black Widow.  Johansson’s costar is fellow Best Supporting Actress nominee, Florence Pugh (Little Women).  David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)  also have supporting roles. The movie comes out on the first of May.

The King’s Man

The third installment of The King’ s Man series will be a prequel. Slated to come out in September, this film is an origin story of the secretive, intelligence organization. From the looks of the trailer, the founders of The King’s Man will embark on an adventurous and daring mission to foil the plans of international villains such as Rasputin.

Ralph Fiennes takes his turn starring in the espionage thriller, playing the Duke of Oxford. Matthew Vaughn will once again write and direct. Always remember oxfords, not brogues.

Top Gun: Maverick

Undoubtedly the movie of the summer. Generations of fans will flock to screens across the country on June 26th to see Tom Cruise return as Pete Mitchell. Pete, now an instructor and test pilot, still has the need for speed and is continues his quest to stay in the air and off the ground.

The star-studded cast includes Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, and Jon Hamm. Hopefully, we will get some karaoke and beach volleyball montages.

The Rhythm Section

This is the only other movie on the list that has already been released. The Rhythm Section came out on Friday and although it hasn’t performed well in its first weekend, the story still warrants interest. Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, a woman lost after her entire family is killed in a tragic plane crash.

When she learns the crash was an accident, the only thing on her mind is revenge. She enlists the help of a former CIA agent played by Jude Law. Reed Morano directs the movie based on a story by Mark Burnell.

Tenet

Christopher Nolan is back for the first time in three years (Dunkirk). He wrote and directed this movie, which will surely challenge Top Gun: Maverick as the movie of the summer when released July 17th. It is very “Christopher Nolan” complete with deafening sounds and large landscape shots. Judging from the trailer, this action movie takes you all over the world and through time.

Sound familiar? The movie stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson and features some familiar Nolan actors such as Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.

A Quiet Place Part II

The Abbott family is back, minus John Krasinski. Even though Krasinski is no longer starring, he still directed and wrote this sequel to the 2018 thriller. It picks up where” Part I” left off, as the Abbott’s are forced to leave the farm where they had built a life.

In their attempt to find new refuge, Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) must protect her children from the horrid monsters that hunt what they hear. Along the way, they run into a loner, played by Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy. Distributed by Paramount, it hits the big screen on March 20th.

No Time To Die

This is the twenty-fifth film of the James Bond franchise and the fifth played by Daniel Craig.  Bond is back and forced to come out of retirement to aide Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) battle the latest mad man (Rami Malek) obsessed with playing God. Bond is pushed to his limit when secrets are uncovered about those closest to him, and he is faced with losing control.

Lea Sydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Christoph Waltz, and Naomie Harris all reprise their roles. The fabled cast is joined by Ana de Armas (Knives Out) and Lashana Lynch. 2020 Grammy superstar Billie Eilish will sing the theme song. It comes out in just a few months on April 10th.
